Thai Police Seize 1.74 Tons of Crystal Meth in Major Drug Bust, Arrest Three Suspects
Bangkok 30 May 2026, Thai authorities have dismantled a major drug trafficking operation in North and Central Thailand, arresting three suspects and confiscating 1.74 tonnes of crystal methamphetamine along with 50 kilograms of ketamine, with a combined street value exceeding 200 million baht.
The arrests took place on May 29th when narcotics officers intercepted a fuel tanker truck suspected of smuggling the drugs from Chiang Rai province down to central Thailand. Police also seized an escort vehicle believed to have been used to scout the route and provide security for the shipment.
According to investigators, the massive drug consignment was destined for distribution networks in Bangkok and nearby provinces. One of the arrested men, described as the operation’s coordinator, allegedly confessed to collecting the shipment in Chiang Rai and arranging its delivery to a high-level trafficker operating in Region 1. He was reportedly promised 600,000 baht for successfully completing the delivery.
The other two suspects, who served as escorts for the convoy, reportedly admitted to police that they had taken part in four similar trafficking runs. Three previous shipments had reportedly reached their destinations without detection.
All three men now face serious charges of possession of methamphetamine and ketamine with intent to distribute. Authorities said the investigation remains active, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend additional members of the trafficking network.
The operation shows ongoing efforts by Thai police to disrupt large-scale drug smuggling routes originating from the northern border regions. Further details are expected to be released as the case progresses.
