Concern for His Citizens, Samdech Warns of Road Safety After Late Night World Cup

PHNOM PENH, June 30, 2026 – Samdech Hun Sen, President of the Senate, has expressed concern for Cambodians staying up late to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026, urging them to prioritize road safety and avoid driving while fatigued.

In a social media post on June 30, Samdech Hun Sen noted that the tournament has been full of surprises, with South American and North African teams sending two traditional European football powerhouses home early, much to the dismay of football bettors.

"The ball is truly round," he remarked.

He also observed that the late-night matches, which run from midnight until 10 am, have left many workers feeling sluggish and less active during the day. "People working in the morning are not as active because they are sleepy from staying up to watch football," he said.

Samdech Hun Sen urged all vehicle drivers to exercise caution and avoid driving if they feel drowsy. "If you are sleepy, do not drive—it could cause danger" .
