Thai Princess Under Fire for 'Inappropriate' State Visit Behaviour in Paris

PHNOM PENH, July 1, 2026 – Thai Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, the only daughter of King Vajiralongkorn, has come under fierce criticism on social media over her conduct during the royal family's state visit to France, with many questioning the appropriateness of her attire and gestures.

Accompanying the King and Queen on the official visit to Paris from June 28 to July 2, which marked the 170th anniversary of Thailand-France diplomatic ties, the princess instead found herself at the centre of a social media storm.

Critics took aim at her "Thai Dusit" ensemble worn to the official dinner hosted by President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. While the outfit is a traditional Thai garment made of hand-woven silk, many argued it appeared underwhelming and insufficiently formal for such a prestigious occasion.

The backlash grew louder when the princess was photographed striking poses for international media during the royal procession—a gesture critics described as unbecoming and out of place for a formal state visit.

Further outrage followed images from a Seine river cruise on June 30, where the princess donned stylish attire and black sunglasses, leading some to remark that she appeared to be on a leisurely holiday rather than representing Thailand on an official diplomatic mission.

The online backlash has sparked heated debate over the conduct expected of royal family members during high-level state functions, with many questioning whether the princess's actions were befitting of Thailand's dignity on the international stage.
