US Army Pacific and Cambodia Vow to Deepen Defence Ties, Plan Angkor Sentinel 2027

PHNOM PENH, July 1, 2026 – Senior military officials from Cambodia and the United States have held high-level talks to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence cooperation, with a focus on joint exercises, professional exchanges, and capacity building.

General Mao Sophan, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army, participated in a video teleconference on July 1 with General Ronald P. Clark, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC). The discussion centred on reviewing past collaboration and outlining future steps to deepen the partnership between the two armies.

Both commanders expressed satisfaction with the progress made in recent years, particularly the successful Army Staff Talks, which have provided a clear framework for advancing military cooperation. They also welcomed the ongoing planning for Exercise Angkor Sentinel 2027, a joint exercise designed to improve operational interoperability and foster mutual trust between the two forces.

The dialogue also covered potential new areas for collaboration, including specialised training programmes, capacity-building initiatives, and Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEE) in priority fields. Both sides agreed that these efforts would contribute to a stronger and more enduring military partnership.

The meeting underscored the growing defence relationship between Cambodia and the United States, reflecting a shared commitment to regional peace, stability, and mutual understanding.
