Vietnam Exports Over 2,000 Tonnes of Durian Daily as Cambodia Begins with 17-Tonne Shipments to China

PHNOM PENH, July 2, 2026 – The durian market to China is revealing stark differences among Southeast Asian countries, with Vietnam emerging as a major exporter while Cambodia takes its first steps into the market.

According to a Vietnam News report published on July 1, trade through the Lao Cai border gate in northern Vietnam surged over 62 percent in the first half of 2026, reaching approximately US$636 million. Agricultural products accounted for more than 90 percent of the total, with durian becoming the most prominent item.

At the Kim Thanh II border gate alone, over 2,000 tonnes of durian were exported to China daily, the highest record in two years. Total durian exports were valued at nearly US$400 million, representing over 30 percent of the entire border trade revenue. The growth is supported by strict quality control systems, including designated farming zones, packaging facilities, and traceability systems.

In contrast, Cambodia officially exported its first batch of fresh durian to China on July 17, 2025, with a shipment of just over 17 tonnes. Despite the modest volume, Cambodia is receiving significant orders from the Chinese market. The Cambodia Durian Association estimates current export capacity at approximately 2,000 tonnes, far below actual demand from China.

Mr. Reun Ratana, Executive Secretary of the Cambodia Durian Association, previously noted that a new transit route through Laos has reduced transport time from about 10 days to 5–6 days and lowered costs by allowing rail use in the final stage.

The comparison highlights the gap between the two countries. Vietnam has built an industrial-scale durian export system capable of supplying over 2,000 tonnes per day to a single market, while Cambodia is still in the market testing and capacity building phase.

Cambodian agricultural experts view the first shipments as a foundation for future expansion, provided there is additional investment in production, quality standards, and supply chains.
