Cambodia Launches Toyota Hilux Travo Assembly Line as Automotive Sector Expands

PHNOM PENH, July 3, 2026 – Cambodia has marked a new milestone in its automotive industry with the official inauguration of the Toyota Hilux Travo assembly line at the Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing (Cambodia) plant in the Royal Group Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone.

Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, co-presided over the ceremony on July 2 with Japanese Ambassador UENO Atsushi. The event was attended by Minister of Industry Hem Vanndy, Toyota Tsusho executives, and other distinguished guests.

In his keynote address, Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol congratulated Toyota Tsusho for its decision to invest in Cambodia, reflecting strong confidence in the country's economic potential. He noted that the assembly of vehicles directly by Cambodian engineers demonstrates their capacity to adopt advanced technology.

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the Japanese Ambassador for his active support in promoting bilateral relations, highlighting the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in 2023. He outlined key government measures to enhance competitiveness, including trade and investment cost reduction, clean energy transition, cybersecurity measures, and improved investment facilitation through digital public services.

He encouraged Toyota to expand investments in automotive components, advanced technology, and human resource training in Cambodia, and called on its supply chain partners to explore further investment opportunities to integrate Cambodia into global supply chains.

Following the ceremony, the Deputy Prime Minister toured the factory and interacted with staff and trainees. He then officially unveiled the first Toyota Hilux Travo assembled by Cambodian talents and took the vehicle for a test drive.

The assembly plant is part of Cambodia's growing automotive sector, which now includes 11 assembly sites with a combined annual production capacity of approximately 37,900 vehicles.
