Cambodia ID Card: Apply Anywhere, No Need to Return Home

PHNOM PENH – Cambodians can now apply for or renew their national ID cards at any police station in the country, regardless of where they were born or registered, under a new policy introduced by the Ministry of Interior.

The reform eliminates the previous requirement for citizens to return to their province of origin to process their identification documents. A citizen originally from Ratanakiri, for instance, who now resides in Prey Veng, can simply go to the nearest provincial police station in Prey Veng to complete the process.

The move is part of the government's ongoing efforts to modernise public administration and make essential services more accessible to all citizens, including migrant workers who may live far from their hometowns.

To apply for a new ID card, applicants must present a copy of their birth certificate or birth registration certificate, along with proof of current residence, such as a residence book, family book, or certificate of residence.

For renewals, citizens must bring their old ID card if it has expired or has less than 180 days of validity left. Those who have changed their permanent address should also provide documentation for their new residence.

In cases where an ID card has been lost or damaged, a formal complaint or the damaged card itself must be submitted together with the application.

The new policy reflects the Royal Government's commitment to improving public service delivery and reducing administrative burdens for ordinary citizens.
