China-Cambodia Mine Clearance Project Concludes, Boosts Regional Cooperation

PHNOM PENH, July 9, 2026 – A mine action project funded under the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation framework has officially concluded, advancing efforts to clear landmines and explosive remnants of war in Svay Rieng Province while strengthening regional capacity in mine action.

The closing ceremony of the "Lancang-Mekong Cooperation in Mine Action" project took place on May 8, 2026, with H.E. Dr. Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice President of the Cambodia Mine Action and Victim Authority, and H.E. Wang Wenbin, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, presiding over the event.

H.E. Kan Pharidh, Secretary of State and Chairman of the National Secretariat of Cambodia for Mekong-Lancang Cooperation, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the project's role in clearing hazardous areas and improving the safety and livelihoods of local communities in Svay Rieng Province.

The project, supported by the Mekong-Lancang Special Fund, also facilitated the exchange of technical expertise and knowledge sharing among member countries, contributing to a more coordinated regional approach to mine action.

The successful completion of the project reflects the strong partnership between Cambodia and China under the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation framework, which continues to deliver tangible benefits to communities affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance.
