Inmates Show Positive Results Through Education and Training Programmes
PHNOM PENH, July 9, 2026 – Cambodia's prison system has recorded notable progress in rehabilitation and healthcare during the first six months of 2026, with thousands of inmates participating in education and vocational training programmes, according to a report from the General Department of Prisons.
A total of 1,897 inmates, including 167 women, took part in non-formal education, life skills programmes, and self-improvement activities. These inmates were assessed as having demonstrated good behaviour and positive rehabilitation, with some being recommended for sentence reduction or pardon.
Additionally, 1,712 inmates participated in short-term vocational training courses in various skills, organised by prison authorities with support from national institutions and partner organisations.
The General Department of Prisons has also implemented strict measures to prevent and control infectious diseases, with particular attention to vulnerable inmates, including those with heart conditions, mental health disorders, and those without family support.
Through strengthened prison health services and improved food quality, the first half of the year saw a significant decrease in emergency cases, external hospital referrals, and overall mortality rates.
As of the latest count, there are 67,677 inmates nationwide, including 4,530 women. Of these, 22 percent are accused, 10 percent are under investigation, 37 percent are convicted, and 31 percent are serving sentences.
