Cambodia, Malaysia Vow to Deepen Military Ties, Praising Cambodia's Unwavering Stance on Border Disputes

PHNOM PENH, July 9, 2026 – Cambodia and Malaysia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral military cooperation, with Malaysia praising Cambodia's unwavering stance on resolving border disputes through dialogue and international law.

General Vong Pisen, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, held bilateral talks with his Malaysian counterpart, General Tan Sri Dato' Seri Malek Razak bin Sulaiman, on July 9. The meeting came as part of the Malaysian defence chief's four-day official visit to Cambodia, which runs from July 8 to 11.

During the talks, General Vong Pisen underscored Cambodia's firm position on resolving border issues through peaceful means, based on international law and relevant agreements, rejecting the use of force to alter borders. He also expressed gratitude for Malaysia's role in contributing to peace in Cambodia, including its participation in the UNTAC mission in 1993 and its facilitation of border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand in 2025.

General Malek Razak commended Cambodia's military for demonstrating high restraint and avoiding armed confrontation despite ongoing border sensitivities. He reaffirmed Malaysia's firm support for resolving the Cambodia-Thailand conflict through dialogue under existing bilateral mechanisms, in line with ASEAN principles, and reiterated that military force is not an option.

Both commanders also discussed expanding military cooperation, including the signing of a defence MoU, joint training and exercises, information sharing, and transnational crime prevention. Both sides affirmed their continued support for the ASEAN Observer Team mission to ensure ceasefire implementation and contribute to peace and stability along the border and across the ASEAN region.
