Thma Da Residents Voice Concern Over Livelihoods as Border Tensions Block Return to Homes

PHNOM PENH, July 10, 2026 – Residents of Thma Da commune, Veal Veng district, Pursat province, have expressed deep concern over their livelihoods after being unable to return to their homes and farmland due to ongoing border tensions with Thailand.

In interviews with national and international journalists who visited the container placement site in Thma Da commune on July 9, residents said they had lost their homes and farmland following the escalation of tensions in the border area. They called for a resolution in line with international law.

Residents alleged that Thai military forces have carried out various activities near the container placement site, including scattering nails, releasing dust, and emitting smoke in areas they consider to be Cambodian territory.

Ms. Yong Raem told reporters that her family has been unable to return to their home and farm since the situation changed, and they are now living in uncertainty.

According to a report from the Pursat Provincial Administration, the placement of containers and barbed wire at the 56th checkpoint since early 2026 has affected approximately 70 hectares of land, including homes, farmland, and other sites.

The Royal Government of Cambodia has stated that it will continue to address the issue through diplomatic channels and international law, calling for respect for territorial integrity and existing agreements to maintain peace along the border.
