Cambodia Named Honorary Country at 19th Francophone Film Festival in France

PHNOM PENH, July 10, 2026 – Cambodia has been selected as the honorary country for the 19th Francophone Film Festival, set to take place from August 24 to 29, 2026, in Angoulême, France.

The announcement was made during a press conference organized by the Cambodian Embassy in France in collaboration with the festival team on July 9 at the Charles Floquet Residence in Paris, showcasing the role and potential of Cambodia's film industry.

H.E. Luy David, Cambodian Ambassador to France, expressed great pride in the recognition, which acknowledges the historical ties between Cambodia and the Francophone community. He noted that the selection holds special significance as Cambodia prepares to host the 20th Francophonie Summit in Phnom Penh on November 15 and 16, 2026.

The event also serves as an opportunity to honour the legacy of the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk, a key figure in Cambodian cinema history who contributed to promoting Khmer culture through film.

During the press conference, the ambassador also recalled the history of Cambodian cinema, from its golden age in the 1960s to the heavy losses under the Khmer Rouge regime, and the ongoing efforts of a new generation of filmmakers to revive the industry.

Cambodia's participation as the honorary country at the Francophone Film Festival is seen as a significant opportunity to promote Cambodian culture, national identity, and the country's film industry on the international stage.
