Cambodia Urges Thailand to End Encroachment Activities During Informal Border Talks

PHNOM PENH, July 15, 2026 – Cambodian and Thai military officials held informal talks at the Choam-Sangam International Border Checkpoint on July 15, with Cambodia pressing Thailand to halt all encroachment activities and resume Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) demarcation work .

The meeting brought together Brigadier General Nith Narong, Head of the Cambodian Regional Border Committee Secretariat, and Major General Kampanat Waphansu, Head of the Thai RBC Secretariat, in Oddar Meanchey province.

According to a statement from the Ministry of National Defence, Cambodia demanded that Thailand cease land clearing, road construction, and barbed wire installation in areas under Cambodian sovereignty and in undemarcated zones. The Cambodian side emphasised the urgent need to commence JBC demarcation work in line with existing bilateral agreements and the December 27, 2025 Joint Statement .

On security incidents involving gunfire and explosions, Cambodia called for thorough investigations and concrete measures to prevent recurrence and avoid further escalation .

The Cambodian delegation also requested that Thailand discipline its frontline forces to prevent provocative actions, including weapons discharge and inappropriate language. Both sides were urged to combat disinformation aimed at fuelling hostility .

Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to the 2025 GBC Joint Statement and the October 2025 Peace Agreement Joint Declaration, emphasising its dedication to a peaceful, fair, and lawful resolution to the border issues. Nearly 21,000 Cambodian civilians remain displaced and unable to return to their homes due to ongoing Thai military occupation .
