Myanmar Leader Min Aung Hlaing Set for Official Visit to Thailand in August

PHNOM PENH, July 16, 2026 – Myanmar's leader, Min Aung Hlaing, will make an official visit to Thailand in August, marking a significant step in regional diplomatic efforts to reintegrate the country after years of isolation, according to a report by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow confirmed the visit during a press conference in Bangkok on July 15, stating that preparations for the official programme are underway. "It's best to bring Myanmar back into the fold," he said, emphasising the need for dialogue after five years of estrangement.

Min Aung Hlaing, who was installed as civilian president in April following restricted elections, has been making a series of international visits, including recent trips to Laos, India, and China. His upcoming visit to Thailand will be his first to the neighbouring country in his new capacity.

The announcement comes shortly after Thailand hosted an informal meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers on July 12, which included Myanmar for the first time since the 2021 military coup.
