Cambodia's Malaria-Free Milestone: Zero Indigenous Cases, No Deaths Since 2018

PHNOM PENH, July 17,2026 – Cambodia has reached a historic milestone in its public health journey, recording zero indigenous malaria cases in the first half of 2026, according to a press release from the Ministry of Health.

The achievement builds on decades of concerted effort under the National Strategic Plan for Malaria Elimination 2011-2025, a vision first championed by Samdech Techo Hun Sen and sustained under Prime Minister Hun Manet. The plan's success lies in its comprehensive approach—early detection, effective treatment, robust prevention, and real-time surveillance—delivered through close collaboration between the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization, development partners, local authorities, and communities.

With no malaria-related deaths reported since 2018, Cambodia is now focused on preventing the re-establishment of transmission as it moves toward WHO malaria-free certification by 2030. A 24-hour surveillance system, supported by village malaria workers and a nationwide health network, ensures rapid response to any suspected cases.

The Ministry of Health continues to urge the public to take preventive measures—use insecticide-treated nets, avoid mosquito bites, and seek immediate testing and treatment if symptoms appear. While the country has made remarkable progress, the risk of imported cases and zoonotic malaria remains, making vigilance essential.
