Thai Fake Soldier's Spreading Misinformation, Causing Concern in Bangkok Fire Aftermath
PHNOM PENH, July 17, 2026 – A man in military attire who gained access to Bangkok's deadly nightclub fire scene has been formally charged with four offences, following his exposure as a volunteer with no official military status, according to reports from Thairath Online and Channel News Asia.
The man, known online as "Lieutenant Nat," was seen moving freely through the restricted area on July 14, speaking to reporters, and briefing Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul—despite having no official role.
On July 15, he was charged with: unauthorised use of radio communication, impersonating an officer without authority, spreading false information causing public alarm, and offences related to possession of military equipment. If the body armour he wore at the scene is confirmed as genuine, additional charges will follow.
According to Thairath Online, he has so far refused to give any statements, though investigators are continuing their questioning. He was released on bail without bond after voluntarily appearing and cooperating with police.
Channel News Asia linked him to a false rumour that the nightclub's management locked patrons inside until they paid their bills—a claim that went viral and fuelled public outrage.
Prime Minister Anutin later admitted he did not know the man or his role. CNA also reported that the man had come directly from a BB gun competition before arriving at the fire scene.
Online observers have questioned how an unverified individual was granted such access, with many pointing out that no footage showed him assisting victims. The incident has raised broader concerns in Thailand about emergency protocols, information reliability, and the spread of misinformation during crises.
