Five Rangers Killed in Attack on Thai Checkpoint
PHNOM PENH, July 23, 2026 – Five paramilitary rangers were killed and five civilians wounded when gunmen attacked a checkpoint in southern Thailand on Wednesday evening.
The attack happened around 6:45 pm on July 22 at a checkpoint in Narathiwat province's Ra-ngae district. Six attackers dressed in black arrived in a pickup truck and opened fire with guns and pipe bombs before fleeing.
The five rangers killed were Sergeant Major First Class Theerayut Somakerd and volunteers Sakiriya Jena, Wimon Dabthong, Nattasit Kaewsena, and Salahuding Pi. The wounded civilians, including two boys, were taken to hospital.
Security forces sealed off the area and launched a search for the attackers.
