Another Thai Woman Caught Smuggling Drugs as Thai Nationals Face Growing Scrutiny
PHNOM PENH, July 23, 2026 – Another Thai woman has been arrested for drug smuggling, this time in Kolkata, India, following a recent high-profile case in Australia where a Thai airline worker was caught with heroin at Melbourne Airport.
The latest arrest was made by Kolkata Police's Special Task Force (STF), which detained two Thai women—Supawadee Sukuliyat and Suthuwana Kut—for allegedly smuggling MDMA from Bangkok into India. The women entered India on tourist visas and arrived in Kolkata by flight. Acting on intelligence, STF officials raided a hotel in Bhawanipur and recovered 20 grams of MDMA, valued at over ₹1 lakh in the illegal market.
According to STF sources, the consignment was meant to supply rave parties in the city. During interrogation, the women reportedly admitted they had been trained in drug smuggling techniques and had concealed the drugs carefully to evade detection at both Bangkok and Kolkata airports.
The arrest comes just weeks after a 26-year-old Thai airline employee was charged in Australia for allegedly smuggling more than one kilogram of heroin concealed in her luggage at Melbourne Airport. That case, reported by Khaosod English, involved a Thai worker who arrived on an international flight while performing work duties, with the heroin valued at AUD 500,000.
The two cases highlight growing concerns over the involvement of Thai nationals in international drug trafficking networks. Authorities in both India and Australia have intensified efforts to track and dismantle smuggling operations originating from Thailand.
