Bringing Cambodia to Boston: One Student's Mission to Reconnect the Diaspora

PHNOM PENH, July 26, 2026 – When Sierra Chhoeun arrived at Northeastern University in Boston, she felt something was missing. Not just the familiar sounds of Khmer language or the warmth of family gatherings around a steaming pot of yao han—but a community that understood what it meant to be Cambodian in America.

So she decided to build one herself.

The 19-year-old rising sophomore from Lynn, Massachusetts, home to the state's second-largest Cambodian population, grew up surrounded by cousins, aunties, and uncles. She heard Khmer spoken everywhere, participated in Buddhist customs, and shared meals that stretched for hours with her mother, sister, grandmother, and aunts.

But when she arrived on campus, just 14 miles away, everything changed.

"It was crazy not seeing another person who can relate to me like that here," Chhoeun told Northeastern Global News.

Now, she is creating Cambodians in Diaspora, a new student organisation awaiting university approval. The group already has about a dozen members and plans to celebrate Khmer New Year, host cooking classes for dishes like mee katang and bor bor, and teach the Khmer language.

Irena Sambo, a 19-year-old born in Cambodia who moved to the U.S. four years ago, said she joined because she missed home. "I'm really hoping to show how amazing my culture is and be welcoming to all the people who are interested," she said.

Associate Professor Annique Un, who survived the Khmer Rouge and fled Cambodia as a child, has offered to serve as the group's adviser. She wants students to know that "the gaps in how people see their community usually come from a lack of exposure, not truth."

For Chhoeun, the mission is personal. "Food is meant to be eaten with people," she said. The same, she believes, goes for culture.
