Chinese Embassy Urges Probe After Fan Restrained at Bangkok Event

PHNOM PENH, July 30, 2026 – A physical confrontation between a Chinese fan and event staff at a fan meeting in Bangkok has sparked heated debate across social media and drawn official attention from both China and Thailand.

The incident occurred on July 25 during the International Novel Festival 2026, where GMMTV was hosting a fan gathering. Videos circulating online showed the woman being led away by staff before being tackled to the ground, prompting widespread discussion on Chinese and Thai social media platforms.

Accounts of what triggered the confrontation differ. Thai attendees alleged the woman had broken queue rules by removing another attendee's name sign and refusing to cooperate with staff. They also claimed she kicked a female staff member before being restrained. However, Chinese social media users defended the woman, saying she acted in self-defense and had evidence of her place in line.

The woman reportedly filed a police report and lodged a complaint with the Chinese Embassy. On July 27, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand issued a statement acknowledging GMMTV's admission that "force beyond what was appropriate" had been used, and urged Thai authorities to promptly investigate the matter.

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow ordered a fact-finding inquiry on July 28, stating: "The facts still need to be investigated. The different reactions are understandable, but it would be better to establish the facts and ensure fairness for all sides."

GMMTV acknowledged that an outsourced staff member had used "excessive force beyond what was necessary," suspended the individual, and expressed regret. The company also denied any policy of discrimination based on race or nationality.

On July 28, the Tourism Authority of Thailand issued a statement expressing regret over the incident and pledging to improve event management to prevent recurrence. Later that day, GMMTV announced both parties had reached a settlement and withdrawn their complaints.
