Norwegian Man Scammed by Thai Girlfriend, Left Stranded and Two Years Homeless

PHNOM PENH, August 7, 2026 – A 44-year-old Norwegian man has been living as a homeless person in Nonthaburi province for over two years after being scammed by his Thai girlfriend, who reportedly took his money and belongings before disappearing, according to local media reports.
Odd Stian Hesseberg told local journalists that he traveled to Thailand to meet a girlfriend in Nakhon Sawan province, but she later cut off contact after allegedly taking his money. His wallet, which contained his passport and personal valuables, was also lost or stolen, leaving him stranded without the means to return to Norway.
Over the past two years, Hesseberg has reportedly relied on leftover food from garbage bins and has been staying at various temples. Local residents and temple staff in Pak Kret district, Nonthaburi province, have expressed concern for his well-being and hope that Thai authorities and the Norwegian Embassy will assist in arranging documentation and support for his return home.
Thai immigration officials have been asked to verify his identity and background while coordinating further assistance, as his visa has already expired.
