Thai Nationals Become Main Focus of Laos’ Expanding Online Gambling Crackdown
PHNOM PENH, Aug. 7 (The Khmer Today) – Thai nationals have emerged as the main focus of Laos’ expanding crackdown on online gambling and cybercrime networks after Lao authorities deported 32 Thai nationals following a major police operation at the ST Vegas complex in Vientiane Capital.
According to Lao Public Security media, the group was handed over to Thai authorities on Aug. 6 at the First Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge linking Vientiane Capital with Nong Khai province in Thailand.
The deportation followed a large-scale raid conducted on July 18 at the ST Vegas complex in Dongphosy village, Hatxayfong district. During the operation, authorities detained 589 people from four nationalities:
373 Thai nationals
199 Lao nationals
15 Vietnamese nationals
2 Cambodian nationals
Lao police said the ST Vegas operation was part of a broader campaign targeting scam centres, illegal online gambling operations, and telecommunications fraud networks operating in and around Vientiane.
The crackdown has intensified in recent weeks. On Aug. 1, police detained 63 additional suspects during coordinated raids in Sikhottabong and Hadxayfong districts. Those arrested included Chinese, Lao, Cambodian, and Thai nationals.
Authorities alleged that the network was involved in call-centre scams and online fraud schemes targeting victims in China.
The latest deportation comes amid growing regional pressure on Laos to take stronger action against organized online crime operating from within its territory.
Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone told the National Assembly in July that Lao authorities had arrested more than 4,400 people linked to cybercrime, online fraud, and illegal gambling cases during the first six months of 2026.
Officials have also reported further arrests since then, including more than 1,000 additional detainees in July, although the figures have not been independently verified.
Analysts say the repeated involvement of Thai nationals in recent operations highlights the cross-border nature of online gambling and cybercrime networks in mainland Southeast Asia, with Laos increasingly under pressure to strengthen enforcement against transnational criminal activities.
