Former Thai MP Arrested After Fatal Shooting of Local Official in Nonthaburi

PHNOM PENH, August 10, 2026 – Police Colonel Thongchai Yenprasert, president of the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organisation, has died after being shot inside his car at the organisation's office by former Nonthaburi MP Chalong Reuangreung, police said. Doctors were unable to save his life.

Chalong Reawraeng, 71, a former three-term MP, allegedly shot Thongchai on Monday outside the provincial office building. Thongchai's driver was also wounded in the attack.

Nonthaburi Governor Chettha Mosikarat had earlier confirmed that Thongchai was struck by several bullets, including one to the neck that severed major veins. He was rushed into surgery but later succumbed to his injuries.

Chalong, in custody, told reporters he did not intend to shoot his long-time acquaintance, claiming he fired after Thongchai's driver drew a weapon. The motive remains under investigation.

The shooting follows a separate incident in the same province three days earlier, in which a 14-year-old killed seven people at his home and school before taking his own life. Police have found no connection between the two cases.
