Lao Authorities Hand Over 23 Thai Nationals in Ongoing Cyber Crime Crackdown

PHNOM PENH, August 17, 2026 – Lao authorities have handed over 23 Thai nationals to Thai custody at the 1st Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge in Vientiane on August 14, marking the fourth such transfer in connection with a major cyber crime and online gambling operation.
The suspects were among 589 individuals detained during a July 18 raid targeting buildings linked to ST Vegus Company Limited in Dongphosy village, Hadsayfong district, Vientiane. Of those detained, 373 were Thai nationals, making up the majority of those held.
Prior handovers took place on August 6, 10, and 13, with 32, 41, and 130 Thai suspects transferred respectively. A total of 226 Thai nationals have now been handed over to Thai authorities, with 147 still in Lao custody.
