Education Secretary Warns Against "Toxic Content" Undermining Cambodia's Education Sector

PHNOM PENH, August 17, 2026 – Secretary of State for Education, Youth and Sport H.E. Sann Vathana has called for an end to what he describes as "toxic content" on social media that threatens the reputation and progress of Cambodia's education system.

In a statement, the secretary expressed concern over recent online posts and analyses that he said have created confusion and undermined the efforts of educators working to reform the sector. He warned that negative narratives—ranging from comparisons with wealthier nations to public shaming of teachers—risk demoralising educators and eroding public confidence in the system.

"Education is the mirror of the nation's future. Constructive criticism can drive progress, but using social media to produce toxic content, attack, and assign blame only destroys," H.E. Sann Vathana said.

He identified several harmful trends, including using international rankings to belittle progress rather than celebrate it, the public shaming of teachers through edited videos, and the tendency to blame schools alone for broader social changes. He also cautioned against stigmatising students for mistakes, arguing that "condemnation itself is the root of immorality."

The secretary urged a shift from a "blame culture" to a "feedback culture," calling on parents, educators, and the public to work together to address challenges such as overcrowded classrooms and resource shortages.

He also stressed that while STEM fields are vital, the humanities and social sciences remain equally important in preserving national identity and fostering peace and understanding.

"We must change our mindset and stop producing negative content," he said. "The goal of education is a positive society."
