Following PM's Directive, Environment Minister Visits Coconut School, Hears Students' Dreams

PHNOM PENH, August 19, 2026 – Just days after Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered the Coconut School on Kirirom Mountain to stay open, Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth paid a visit to see the school for himself—and to listen to the children whose futures depend on it.

The Minister met with teachers and students at the remote community school in Kampong Speu province, which provides education and life skills to more than 150 local children. He praised the dedication of volunteer teachers and the school's founder, Ouk VanDay, who built the school on borrowed land with limited resources.

The visit was part of the Prime Minister's directive to find a lasting solution for the school, which had faced demolition due to its location on historical military land. The Prime Minister not only halted the eviction but also pledged monthly support of 5 million riel and one tonne of rice starting September 2026.

During his visit, the Environment Minister highlighted the school's role in teaching children to love nature, protect forests, and reduce plastic use—values that align with the ministry's "Clean, Green, and Sustainable" vision. He also visited Kirirom Primary School in the same area to see how both schools can work together to serve the mountain community.
