Thai Opposition MP Sued for Exposing Senate Selection Scandal

PHNOM PENH, August 20, 2026 – A Thai opposition MP is facing defamation lawsuits after investigating alleged cheating in the 2024 Senate selection process, according to Prachatai.

Parit Wacharasindhu, a member of the People's Party, said at least three senior officials have sued him: Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri, Minister Suksomrauy Wantaneeyakul, and Senator Sorachat Wish Suwanprom. Parit said his probe was based on evidence and done in the public interest, and he believes this will protect him in court.

The case involves allegations that the ruling Bhumjaithai Party (BJT) rigged the Senate selection. More than one-third of current senators are believed to be linked to the party, and the scandal has become a major embarrassment for the government.

The opposition and advocacy group iLaw have released evidence exposing how the scheme worked, who was involved, and money transfers linked to the case. Many are watching whether 229 people allegedly involved will face charges.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and eight others have also threatened to sue iLaw's director, with one minister already filing a case.

The investigation began under the previous government. A special police unit accepted the case as money laundering, and an Election Commission (EC) subcommittee recommended prosecuting 229 people—138 of them current senators.

But after Anutin became prime minister, some witnesses changed their stories, saying they were pressured to lie. In December 2025, authorities decided to prosecute only 8 of the 229.

The EC is now reviewing the case and is expected to decide by the end of August whether to proceed. Many fear the commission may drop the case entirely.
