Heavy Rain Forces Hanoi Schools to Switch to Online Classes

PHNOM PENH, August 24, 2026 – Several schools in Hanoi have postponed class times or switched to online learning as heavy rain from Typhoon Narra continues to batter the capital and northern provinces, with forecasts warning of flooding and traffic congestion.

On the morning of August 24, schools including Nguyen Tat Thanh School, Gifted Secondary School, and High School for Pedagogy and Educational Sciences announced they would move to online classes. The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting warned of continued heavy rain, with some areas expected to receive over 200 millimeters.

Other schools, such as Newton Secondary and High School, delayed the start of the first period from 7:45 AM to 8:00 AM and prepared contingency plans for online teaching if conditions worsened. Pascal Secondary School postponed classes until 8:30 AM and arranged breakfast for students, with teachers on duty until 6:00 PM to assist parents with late pickups.

At Doan Thi Diem Primary and Secondary Schools and the Hoang Mai Star system, parents were given flexibility to keep children at home if their areas were affected by flooding or road closures.

At the university level, the Academy of Finance and Hanoi University of Finance and Banking also switched to online learning.

The affected schools are mostly private institutions that began the new academic year in early August. Most public schools, which have not yet started the term, were not affected.

Typhoon Narra was forecast to reach the eastern waters of Bach Long Vi with winds of level 9 and gusts up to level 11 on the afternoon of August 24. Heavy rain and flooding have already caused landslides and inundation at 735 traffic points across the north, including 700 in Lang Son province.
