Suspect Detained After Coordinated Attacks at 40 Sites in Narathiwat; Train Services Disrupted
PHNOM PENH, August 24, 2026 – Security officials have detained one male suspect in connection with a coordinated series of attacks at 40 locations across Narathiwat province on the night of August 22, while bomb disposal teams continue to inspect a damaged railway track, according to Khaosod English.
The suspect was identified through CCTV footage that allegedly showed him smashing a security camera in Cho-airong district. He has denied involvement despite the footage, authorities said.
The attacks prompted the State Railway of Thailand to suspend all train services from August 23. EOD and forensic teams, along with military sniffer-dog units, inspected the railway line at kilometre marker 1090 between Maruebo and Tanyong Mat stations, where three improvised explosive devices were found. Each device was packed inside a 25-kilogram gas cylinder and fitted with timers.
One device was placed directly on the railway track, damaging two concrete sleepers and tearing the rail, making it impassable. Two other devices were placed on electricity poles about 50 metres away, causing damage but no collapse. Officials estimated at least six people may have been involved in the attack at this location.
Train services between Tanyong Mat and Sungai Kolok stations remain suspended, with repairs expected to take one to two days. Passengers at affected stations have been forced to return tickets or change travel plans.
EOD and forensic officers are continuing to inspect the remaining attack sites across all 13 districts of Narathiwat, with authorities cordoning off affected areas to protect the public from unexploded devices or other hazards.
