Environment Minister Warns of Strict Legal Action Against Natural Resource Crimes

Phnom Penh, March 24, 2026 — The Minister of Environment, Eang Sophalleth, has warned that authorities will take strict legal action, without exception, against individuals and accomplices involved in natural resource crimes in Cambodia.

Speaking at a workshop on climate financing and REDD+ project preparation, he emphasized the need for stronger enforcement and effective management of natural resources in line with government policy and environmental strategies.

He instructed all provincial environment departments to strengthen cooperation with relevant stakeholders to monitor and prevent illegal activities, including forest clearing, land encroachment, and deforestation in protected areas. He also stressed that confiscated equipment used in such activities must be traced to identify those behind the offenses and prosecuted according to the law.

The minister further stated that seized materials, including illegally logged timber, must be properly managed and utilized in ways that benefit local communities and the nation.

The measures reflect the government’s ongoing commitment to protecting natural resources, supporting sustainable development, and improving the livelihoods of local communities, particularly indigenous groups.
