Cambodia Rejects Thailand’s Baseless Claims of Possible Armed Conflict

Phnom Penh, March 24, 2026 — Cambodia has firmly rejected recent claims circulating in Thai media suggesting that the country is preparing for a possible armed conflict, describing the allegations as baseless and misleading.

The response follows remarks reported by Khaosod English, in which Thiranan Nuntakhwang, Director of Army Intelligence, warned that a third round of conflict with Cambodia “may be possible.” He pointed to Cambodia’s alleged large-scale weapons procurement from Eastern Europe and highlighted the period following the rainy season as a potential window of concern. He also referenced Cambodia’s upcoming 2027 general election as a possible contributing factor, while urging Thai forces to remain vigilant.

Despite acknowledging that the current situation along the border appears to be moving away from direct military confrontation, the Thai intelligence chief cautioned that the possibility of renewed clashes could not be ruled out.

In response, Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence dismissed the assertions as unfounded. Spokesperson Lieutenant General Maly Socheata stated that such claims lack factual basis and do not reflect the realities on the ground.

The Ministry emphasized that the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces remain fully committed to maintaining peace, stability, and security along the Cambodia–Thailand border. It reaffirmed Cambodia’s adherence to key bilateral agreements, including the outcomes of the 3rd Special Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) held on December 27, 2025, and the Joint Declaration on Peace signed between the two countries on October 26, 2025.

Cambodian authorities reiterated that all border-related issues are being addressed through peaceful means, guided by international law and existing treaties agreed upon by both nations. Officials stressed that Cambodia’s defense posture is rooted in safeguarding sovereignty while avoiding unnecessary escalation.

“The Cambodian armed forces strictly implement the directives of the Royal Government to maintain peace and stability along the border,” the statement noted.

The Ministry also called on national and international media to exercise responsibility in reporting and to avoid amplifying unverified claims that could inflame tensions.

While external narratives continue to speculate on potential conflict, Cambodian officials maintain that the border situation remains stable, with ongoing cooperation mechanisms in place. The government reaffirmed its commitment to good neighborly relations with Thailand, underscoring that peace and dialogue remain the cornerstone of its policy.
