Cambodia Secures $1 Billion for Funan Techo Waterways Project

PHNOM PENH, September 11, 2026 – Cambodia has secured nearly US$1 billion in financing for the Funan Techo Integrated Water Resources Management Project, following the signing of a facility agreement between the Export-Import Bank of China (China Exim Bank) and Funan Techo Coastal-Inland Waterways Company.
The agreement was signed on September 9, 2026, and witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), H.E. Sun Chanthol, during the International Investment Cooperation Forum held in Xiamen, Fujian, China, under the theme "Global Wisdom, Mutual Empowerment: International Investment & Cooperation Exchange."
Implemented under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, the project is expected to connect Cambodia's inland waterway network to the sea, reduce logistics costs, and strengthen the Kingdom's competitiveness in the logistics sector. It will also create a new economic corridor supporting industrial zones, logistics hubs, agricultural processing, satellite cities, and tourism along the waterway for decades to come.
The CDC described the project as a "true game changer" for Cambodia's economic development.
