Koh Sralao: Cambodia’s New Standard for Green Development
Phnom Penh, March 27, 2026 — The Ministry of Environment has announced plans to develop Koh Sralao in Koh Kong province into Cambodia’s first carbon-neutral island, positioning it as a model for sustainable coastal development.
The initiative was unveiled by Minister of Environment H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth during a visit on March 26, alongside the “Peace Mangrove Festival.” Home to more than 300 households, the island will serve as a pilot site for environmentally friendly, community-driven development.
The project will focus on infrastructure development, stakeholder engagement, and local participation. Key measures include mangrove restoration, climate-resilient infrastructure, renewable energy use such as solar power, improved waste management, eco-tourism development, and the promotion of smart agriculture.
Officials say the project aims to advance environmental conservation while supporting sustainable economic growth, with the potential to serve as a national benchmark for green development.
