Travel Warnings Issued for Thailand's Southern Provinces Over Terrorism Risks

Phnom Penh, Sep 17,2026 — Several countries are warning travelers to avoid Thailand's southern provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat, plus southern Songkhla, due to an ongoing separatist insurgency that has killed over 7,000 people since 2004. Attacks include bombings, shootings, and arson, though tourists are rarely targeted.
The U.S., UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand advise against non-essential travel to these areas, with some urging citizens not to go at all. Japan and South Korea have issued similar warnings, and South Korea's advisory functions as a travel ban. China and European nations also caution against visiting the Deep South.
Popular tourist spots like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Koh Samui are not affected. Hat Yai in Songkhla is sometimes included in caution zones due to occasional bombings. Travelers heading to affected areas should check their embassy's latest advice and stay alert.
